TOKYO: During his visit to Japan this week, former Prime Minister Hun Sen met with former Japanese Foreign Minister Komura Masahiko to reminisce about the close ties formed between the two countries under their tenure and to discuss current affairs.

Cambodian People’s Party President Hun Sen began by offering his condolences to Japan over the recent earthquake and the lives lost during it. He thanked the Japanese government for taking care of the well-being and safety of Cambodian students, trainees and workers who were in the earthquake-affected areas.

Komura Masahiko recalled good memories of the past between old friends, especially during the peace talks of the 1990’s when Japan contributed to the establishment of the Supreme National Council (SNC) and the process of rebuilding Cambodia after the civil war. He praised Hun Sen's role in achieving peace, laying the groundwork for Cambodia’s rapid socio-economic development, all the while strengthening bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan.

The former Foreign Minister also expressed confidence in Cambodia’s new administration, led by Prime Minister Hun Manet, who he called a confident leader who will continue to maintain past achievements while having a long-term vision for a more prosperous Cambodia. He is certain that bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan will continue to deepen under Cambodia’s new leadership, in addition to strengthening bonds with the region and the world.

The two diplomats also took the opportunity to discuss and exchange views on geopolitical issues in the region, including the situation in Myanmar.
